Janet Chiong
I was born and grew up in Beijing, China. After getting my undergraduate
degree, I worked for several years in the hospitality industry in China and
Germany. In 1991, I emigrated to the U.S. Later on from an unsuccessful
marriage, I became a single mom with one-year-old child.
Being unable to find a job with limited English, I started my own travel
business. My initial years were extremely difficult as a single mom and a small
business owner. However, my hard work rewarded me. Within a few years, my
business had become profitable and was acquired by a large firm. I stayed on
with the business as a manager and financial controller. During the period in
which the business grew and became stable, I improved my English, obtained basic
business knowledge and raised a lovely daughter.
In 2002, I decided to return to school to pursue an MBA degree. My future
plans include starting a consulting company that will provide financial advice
to the hospitality or other service industries.
The FWA scholarship has enabled me to continue studying at the University of
San Francisco, while keeping a job, and still having time to be a mother to my
12 year old daughter. With this help I have reached many of my goals. The future
looks bright, and I hope some day to be able to give something back to the
community in which I live and to the Financial Women's Association.
